Deadline:  Open until filled

The UNOLS Scientific Committee for Oceanographic Aircraft Research (SCOAR) is seeking applications and nominations to fill multiple committee positions that will be open late fall 2023. Experience with the use of aircraft (crewed or uncrewed) or coordinating the use of aircraft with other marine facilities in your research is highly desirable.

The SCOAR provides advice and recommendations to the National Oceanographic Aircraft Facility managers and supporting federal agencies on aspects of operations, sensor development, fleet composition, utilization and data services as appropriate.  In addition, SCOAR and the UNOLS Office shall provide the ocean science user community with valuable information and advice concerning experiment design, facility usage, scheduling and capabilities.

The Committee also promotes collaborations and cooperation between facility operators, funding agencies and the scientific community to improve the availability, capabilities and quality of aircraft facilities supporting the ocean sciences. By promoting collaboration between the ocean science community, the atmospheric science community and other science communities using aircraft in support of their research, the Committee works to improve utilization and capabilities for all of these communities.

The term of office is three years and a member may serve one additional three-year term. The SCOAR meets each fall in person with a few of short virtual meetings throughout the year.

For more information can be found on the SCOAR website.  For additional information about SCOAR and committee responsibilities contact the SCOAR Chair, Christopher Zappa or Alice Doyle.

Applicants or nominees should submit:

  • A current 2-page C.V.
  • A statement of interest to serve on SCOAR including any experience using/operating aircraft (crewed or uncrewed) facilities for oceanographic research.

Copies of these materials should be sent to the Alice Doyle - alice@unols.org

Regional and institutional diversity will be considered in choosing a new member*.  Committee members are appointed by the UNOLS Chair based on the recommendation of the SCOAR members and with the concurrence of the UNOLS Council.

* To maintain institutional diversity on the SCOAR, applicants should be from institutions other than those that will continue to be represented on the SCOAR. These continuing institutions are: NCAR, University of Arizona, U of Miami, and L-DEO.
