The University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) is a consortium of academic oceanographic institutions collaborating with U.S. Federal Government agencies to ensure widespread access to advanced research vessels, submersibles, and related facilities crucial for robust research and educational programs in ocean sciences. Committed to fostering an inclusive environment, UNOLS values diversity.

Currently, UNOLS is actively involved in initiatives to modernize the academic research fleet, optimize vessel scheduling, enhance outreach efforts for early career scientists and underrepresented communities, bolster cyberinfrastructure/security, and promote a positive work environment during sea-based activities. For more details about UNOLS and its initiatives, please visit the website at http://www.unols.org.

The UNOLS Council serves as the governing body representing and acting on behalf of the UNOLS membership. Council nominations are now open for four positions, starting in November 2024:

  • Council Chair Elect - affiliated with any UNOLS Institution
  • Operator - affiliated with a UNOLS Operating Institution
  • At-Large Position - affiliated with any UNOLS Institution (Operator OR Non-Operator)
  • Non-Operator - affiliated with a UNOLS institution that is NOT an operator

The Chair-Elect serves a term of two years as Chair-Elect, followed by two years as Council Chair, and two years as Council Past-Chair. Council members serve three-year terms, with the option of re-election for a second term. The Council typically convenes twice annually (spring and fall) in person, with an additional virtual meeting held in the summer.

Nominations for the slate are invited from individuals affiliated with a UNOLS institution and can be submitted to alice@unols.org. Self-nominations are encouraged. Each nomination should include a 2-page CV and a statement of interest outlining how the nominee’s efforts, service, or scholarship can contribute to the Council’s current focus areas or expand its scope. Additionally, nominees should describe their contributions to introducing ocean sciences to underrepresented communities and fostering an inclusive environment conducive to individual excellence. Applicants without prior experience in these areas should explain how their work aligns with UNOLS’ commitment to diversity. More information on the Council’s priorities can be found through their meeting agendas and presentations on the UNOLS Council webpage.

A Nominating Committee comprising Dennis Hansell (University of Miami), Chrissy Wiederwohl (Texas A&M University), and Anita Lopez (University of Hawaii) has been established to prepare a slate of candidates. The Committee will carefully consider the qualifications of nominees and ensure regional and disciplinary balance on the Council. The slate of candidates recommended by the Committee will be subject to a vote by the UNOLS membership prior to the 2024 UNOLS Annual Meeting.

Nominations are due by September 12, 2024.
